Tesco Cup: Cascade 1v 4 Rhiwbina. 28 January 2012

For the best part of the first half this was a game that looked as though the run of play would be totally against Rhiwbina.  They dominated for large periods, keeping Cascade pinned back in their own half, but with no goals to show for all their pressure.  Yet, on one of the few occasions Cascade managed to break out they put the ball in the back of the net.  The Rhiwbina boys kept their heads, kept playing football and kept pressing. They had the ball cleared off the line on a number of occasions.   They missed a penalty.  In spite of this constant pressure Rhiwbina went in at half time one down.

With the start of the second half, the story changed.  Early on,  Rhiwbina got the equaliser.  From then on all their pressure, defence-splitting passing and team work got the rewards it deserved – another three goals!

Winning 4-1 was a great result for Rhiwbina, but just as important was the all-round quality of their football.  With the pressure building in the league, Rhiwbina will need to keep playing football of this quality to keep their rivals at bay.

U14s Tesco Cup – Round One

Cascade YC  1 V  4 Rhiwbina Black Caerphilly

28 January 2012, U14s Fixtures

With Rhiwbina involved in the Tesco Cup this Saturday it’s a chance for St Albans to consolidate their position at the top of the A division.  But if the right Pentwyn team turn up, it could be an interesting game.  If Marlboro Black secure a win against Llanedeyrn they will be in touching distance of Rhiwbina and still with a game in hand.

In the B Division, with Butetown not playing, Caerau  have the chance to move into the top spot.  In the C Division Marlboro Red have another chance and home advantage to try and peg back runaway leaders, Marshfield.

U14s Football Results for 21 January 2012

Heavy overnight rain decimated today’s fixture programme and a lot of games had to be called off.

In the A Division, Llandeyrn probably wished their game had been called off.  They went down 12-2 to St Albans.  The Buns now go to the top of the table as Rhiwbina’s game against Maindy was one that became  a victim of the rain.  Marlboro had a good win against Whitchurch, with a 6-2 victory.  The first half was even and the half time score was 2-1 to Marlboro.  But in the second half the Marlboro style of passing football again paid dividends.  They score four excellent team goals to run out comfortable winners and have quietly put themselves in a position to launch a challenge for the top two places.

In the B division Pentyrch finally lost their unbeaten record going down 7-3 to Danescourt in a rain and wind swept Pentyrch.  Urdd chalked up their second victory in a row putting nine goals past a spirited Rumney team.  Urdd scored an early goal and then went on to control the game, scoring at regular intervals.  At half-time the score was 4-0.  Early in the second half Rumney were unlucky to concede an own goal.  But from then on Rumney staged something of a revival with three goals of their own.  But with Urdd playing a real team game, they themselves scored four further goals and never looked in any real danger of losing their grip on the game.

In the C Division, Thornhill seem to have found their mojo again with a 6-1 win over Lisvane Orange.

21 January 2012 U14s Football Fixtures

In this week’s fixtures the Rhiwbina Black game against Maindy should be the one to watch.  On the back of an 8 – 1 victory over Pentwyn last week, Maindy’s confidence will be sky-high.  The Marlboro Blacks game against Whitchurch is also interesting.  If Marlboro win, they will begin to look a little more comfortable in third place and put themselves in a position to launch a challenge for the top two places.  If Whitchurch win, then they begin to close the gap on third place and with a game in hand could start closing Marlboro down.  In the B division the big game is  Caerau Ely against Butetown.  It is Caerau’s chance to draw level on points with Butetown.  On the other hand, a Butetown win could start to put clear blue water between them and the rest of the division.  But with four games in hand Pentyrch could still be the dark horses.  With the top two not playing this weekend a good win for the Grange Quins could see them move into second position.  But following a good win last week, Gwaelod will have had their confidence boosted and will be in no mood to give the Quins an easy game.
