In tonight’s A Division game Marlboro Black were at home to Pentwyn and keen for a win to maintain third place and keep off the challenge of Whitchurch. Marlboro were coming off the back of two good wins and confidence would have been high. But Pentwyn were always likely to prove a much tougher proposition.
In a tight first half Marlboro edged matters, getting their noses in front with an early goal. At half time, the Pentwyn Manager switched to three at the back. This change of tactics paid off instantly with Pentwyn getting the equaliser. For the rest of the half Pentwyn pressed and probed the Marlboro defence. But defence is Marlboro’s strength. They kept Pentwyn at bay, and looked to hit them on the counter attack. As full-time approached it seemed that the two teams tactics would cancel each other out. But with virtually the last kick of the game, a through ball out of the Marlborough defence sat up nicely for their midfielder who burst through and, with an excellent lob, popped the ball over the onrushing Pentwyn goalie to make the final score 2-1. A disappointing end for Pentwyn, but Marlboro will be glad of the three points in their bid to secure third place.
